Astro-Med Announces Wireless EEG

WEST WARWICK, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 2004--The Grass Technologies Product Group of Astro-Med, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALOT) today announced it has "cut the cord" on its Comet and AURA series amplifier systems.

Traditionally, EEG recording consists of an amplifier, power supply, PC, and other components all on a roll around cabinet. Now, utilizing wireless technology, the small Grass Technologies amplifier sits near the patient, without a physical connection to the PC. The computer, monitor, and cart are located somewhere outside of the OR or ICU, where the EEG is observed.

In the typical OR, space is at a premium because of all of the activity during an operation. The OR is usually limited in size, and quickly becomes crowded with staff after the arrival of the patient. It is often necessary to roll in a large EEG machine and set it right next to a patient prior to operating, further limiting available space. In order to alleviate "crowding" in the OR and ICU, Grass Technologies has harnessed wireless technology to separate PC workstations from the small Grass Technologies EEG amplifier systems that patients are connected to.

During the typical EEG application, patients are generally in the same room as the equipment. The wireless configuration allows for an amplifier to sit near the patient without any cables to interfere with the technician when tending to the patient. When recording an EEG in various rooms throughout the hospital or in tight spaces, the new wireless configuration eliminates the need for potentially expensive cable runs from within the patient room to a PC outside the room.

The introduction of the wireless EEG exemplifies a market expansion technique utilized by Grass Technologies, and is a simple method of increasing the use of Grass Technologies products in hospitals.

The Grass Technologies Product Group of Astro-Med designs, manufactures, and sells advanced systems for EEG and PSG (sleep monitoring), Long-term Epilepsy monitoring, and OR/ICU neuromonitoring, as well as supplies, accessories, and a broad range of products for neurophysiological research.
